Enzymatic Lithium

The Enzymatic Lithium kit is for the quantitative in vitro determination of lithium in human serum. Measurements of Lithium are performed to ensure that proper drug dosage is administered in the treatment of patients suffering from bipolar disorder and to avoid toxicity.

Lithium carbonate has remained one of the most effective agents for treatment of patients suffering from bipolar disorder (manic depressive psychosis).  Recently, studies have also shown that lithium holds promise against Alzheimer’s disease. However, lithium has many side effects. Over dosage of lithium can cause acute Li+ intoxication, which occurs quite often due to its narrow therapeutic index.  Therefore, the timely and accurate monitoring of serum levels of lithium after a therapeutic dosage is critical.

Compared to existing methods, this new Enzymatic Lithium assay provides improved reagent stability and a reduced cost per test. The assay features excellent accuracy and precision and offers an extended reportable range of 0.1-3.0 mmol/l lithium which will reduce the need for re-testing elevated patient samples. The method also demonstrates no significant interference from indigenous ions and other interfering substances including haemoglobin, bilirubin, triglycerides and ascorbic acid.

The assay can be applied to most common clinical chemistry analyzers, and application parameters are available on request.

Lithium values are quoted in all General Chemistry Controls supplied by Inverness Medical UK, as well as our PAR® TDM Control.  Please refer to ‘Quality Control’ for further details.
